Gut Directed Hypnosis
Gut-directed hypnotherapy is a specialised, evidence-based approach that uses targeted hypnosis techniques to calm the gut-brain axis—helping to reduce symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), including pain, bloating, and altered bowel habits. This therapeutic method is grounded in neuroscience and psychogastroenterology, addressing the complex communication between the mind and the digestive system.
Pioneered by Professor Peter Whorwell at the University of Manchester, gut-directed hypnotherapy has been clinically studied for over 30 years. Research consistently shows it to be a highly effective, drug-free intervention for IBS. In fact, studies have reported significant symptom improvement in up to 70–80% of patients who undergo structured hypnotherapy protocols (Whorwell et al., 1984; Palsson et al., 2016).
As awareness of the gut-brain connection grows, gut-directed hypnotherapy is increasingly recognised by healthcare professionals as a vital mind-body treatment option for chronic digestive conditions.
