Walking and talking therapy is one of the biggest trends in recent years, and it’s easy to see why. It fits with people’s realisations that being outdoors is good for us, which is something we all know instinctively and which is also backed up by the research.
It also provides a way for people to communicate which is, for many, more comfortable than sitting in a therapy room environment. This is particularly relevant for neurodivergent clients, who might have sensory sensitivities to various triggers in a therapy room, but it’s also true for anyone who finds it more comfortable chatting while they’re walking, which often feels less pressured than being in a more closed off environment.
And for those of us – therapists and clients alike – whose lives are increasingly lived through the computer screen, the need to connect in-person is stronger than ever.

But…how do we deliver outdoor therapy, safely and effectively? This was what held me back from walking and talking therapy for some time. And it’s why I’ve developed two trademarked courses – Hypnosis Through Nature® and Therapy Through Nature – TTN® - to equip you with all the skills you need to meet growing client demand.
Where Can I Study Walking and Talking Therapy?
Sometimes simply being outside, providing a different environment to talk in, bringing movement into our sessions, and going to new environments creates a massive shift in energy and in our client’s experience. And my Therapy Through Nature- TTN® course covers how to work safely with clients, how to support them in an outdoor environment, and how to consider issues such as informed consent and confidentiality.
But what’s unique about my Hypnosis Through Nature® course is that it specifically teaches you how to deliver hypnotherapy in an outdoor environment.
In addition to covering everything usually talked about in a walking and talking therapy course, it provides a clear, structured framework for working hypnotherapeutically, with utilisation and through the use of metaphor and transition.
You’ll learn how to do everything you usually do with your client – including using inductions, post-hypnotic suggestions, bringing in the hypnotherapeutic tools you regularly use with your clients – but you’ll learn how to do all of that in an outdoor setting.
The use of metaphors
The outdoor world is full of metaphors that are meaningful, and which we can draw on during our sessions. But sometimes knowing how to pick up on metaphors can be challenging.
We can focus on four elements – earth, air, water and light – and connect these elements to our client's growing sense of awareness and growth.
The elements are used to guide your client from a starting point – of focusing on grounding and rootedness during their earth session, through growing awareness during their light session and healing during their water session – towards a feeling of hope and growth during their light session.
The use of transitions
Whether you’re aware of it or not, your therapy work – online or in the therapy room – will rely on transitions. Whether that’s turning on a screen, welcoming someone through a door, or moving into an induction – you’re transitioning your client’s experience in a meaningful way.
Outdoors, we can use the environment to guide these transitions. The start of a path ties in with a shift towards the start of a session. Movement along a path guides your client towards their inner-focused state. Finding spaces for stillness is an opportunity for your client to feel more removed from the world around them.
Hypnosis Through Nature® provides clear guidance on how to move through these transitions with your clients, using the landscape as your outdoor therapy space, and ensuring your client has a transformational experience.
Working with groups
Group work is a great way to offer a more accessible experience to your client, and it’s a great way to market your practice. Every group participant has the potential to become an individual client. And working with groups outdoors is a great way to make your practice more visible.
Working with groups also requires a different set of skills, and how to deliver walking and talking hypnotherapy is covered in depth on the course.
As with individual client work, you’ll receive all the forms and resources you need to work safely and ethically with groups.
Where can I study walking and talking therapy FAQs.
Can anyone train as a walking and talking therapist or hypnotherapist?
This course is designed for people who already have a primary recognised qualification in hypnotherapy or therapy.
Is working outdoors with therapy clients safe?
Yes, working outdoors with therapy clients is safe, but it requires extra thought and you must have measures in place around confidentiality, informed consent and risk assessments – all of which are covered during this advanced hypnotherapy training.
How is hypnotherapy outdoor training different to walking and talking therapy training?
Outdoor therapy, or walking and talking therapy, courses only focus on the “being outdoors” aspect of therapy. Whilst this is extremely important, Hypnosis Through Nature® provides a clear, structured framework to deliver hypnotherapy, utilising earth, air, water and light and linking outdoor transitions to the hypnotherapy skills you already have.
