Why choosing courses with context and critical thinking matters for hypnotherapy cpd.

Updated: 2 days ago

My career is built around providing continuing professional development courses for hypnotherapists (and often coaches, counsellors, psychologists and nutritionists). I'm always thinking about the end-user, and I'm lucky enough to get lots of feedback, particularly during the live training (but I also love it when someone sends an email letting me know how they're getting on with the materials!).

I've written before about what to think about when you're choosing hypnotherapy CPD, which includes making sure it's an area you're interested in, thinking about how and where you can develop your skills, and ensuring that your client work is evidence-informed, current and fresh. But apart from subject matter, what else matters when you're choosing advanced hypnotherapy courses?

Key takeaways:

  • Choosing hypnotherapy CPD courses that align with your interests and what clients are looking for is important.

  • It's important to choose courses that teach you about the context of the subject you're learning.

  • CPD should be seen as a starting point in your learning and it's important to choose training that encourages you to think deeply about the subject

  • Hypnotherapy CPD should reflect where you are in your career - you might want to explore more advanced options as you gain experience

Context and criticial thinking in hypnotherapy continuing professional development

One of the most important things for me is ensuring you have context, and that you can think critically about whatever subject you're studying.

This means that, instead of simply teaching you techniques, I explain why we're using a specific technique.

And it means going back a stage further too, to understanding whatever it is you're working with.

This matters. Because if you understand it, even if initially you're following my guidance, you can learn how to adapt things to your preference. With experience, your skills will grow.

Without that context and understanding, it's very difficult to develop your own style and feel confident working with clients.

The importance of understanding what I was doing became apparent to me after attending one of my first CPDs, which was on pain management.

I learned a few good techniques on this course, but I came away from it having no understanding whatsoever about chronic pain. I didn't understand why some techniques or scripts were useful here or there, and it's one of the reasons I shied away from working with chronic pain for some time - until I had time to sit down and thoroughly research it for myself.

And research and context goes hand in hand. To feel truly confident in what you're doing, and to be able to explain to a client the effectiveness of hypnotherapy, particularly in the early days before you have client testimonials, it's incredibly helpful to go back to the original research. This is one reason why I always reference original research. In those cases where there isn't much research, I try and explain why, or what some of the problems are with existing research.

Why do I design my hypnotherapy CPD courses this way?

My background is in academic teaching and research. I learned how to teach at university level, and I wouldn't bring any less than this level of teaching to adult students.

My mentor at university sat me down my first day of teaching and told me what education meant, explaining that it came from the Latin Educere - which means to lead out - and Educare, which means to bring up or nourish. He said that anything I taught should start from these points and that there was no point in shoving information in front of students. They had to understand that information, to feel excited and inspired by it, to feel that they were supported and that they could take it forward.

Quite simply, I've always aimed to follow this rule.

The other reason I prioritise sharing context and information in my courses is because I know how frustrating it is, as a practicing hypnotherapist, to lack that information. As a student, working part time and running a hypnotherapy practice, I have to be able to trust that a training course is giving me enough to feel confident in putting techniques and tools into practice. I wouldn't offer my students any less than that.

When I've completed training, I want to feel armed with facts. And as well as those courses that haven't provided me with the level of knowledge I've needed, early in my career I was lucky enough to complete some fantastic training. This included studying a hypnobirthing course which, for me, plugged many of the gaps in my initial training. This set the bar high and I realised that, once I had enough experience under my belt, I wanted to provide this level of training to others.

Choosing the right advanced hypnotherapy training for you is an entirely individual choice. You'll find a trainer, or trainers, whose values are aligned with your values and who explain things in a way that makes sense to you.

You'll find the right type of options to grow your practice, focusing on niche areas that inspire you, and gaining skills in areas that clients are looking for.

All of that is fairly obvious advice, but one thing that hypnotherapists often don't consider when choosing continuing education courses is the amount of information and context that is provided. It's worth asking how much information is included in the course, whether the course is properly researched, and whether the tools and techniques that are taught are explained.

All of this is important if you want to take your learning forwards, independently, and continue to grow as a hypnotherapist.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I look for in an advanced hypnotherapy CPD course?

A good advanced hypnotherapy CPD course should do more than teach techniques or provide scripts. It should explain the psychology, research and clinical reasoning behind each approach, helping you understand when, why and how to use different interventions. This allows you to develop confidence, adapt your work to individual clients and build your own therapeutic style.

Why is evidence-informed hypnotherapy training important?

Evidence-informed hypnotherapy training helps practitioners understand the current research while recognising its strengths and limitations. Rather than simply presenting techniques as effective, high-quality CPD should explain the evidence that supports them, discuss where research is still developing and encourage critical thinking. This enables practitioners to work ethically and explain their approach confidently to clients.

Is learning hypnotherapy techniques enough?

No. Techniques are only one part of effective therapy. To become a skilled practitioner, it's important to understand the condition you're working with, the psychological processes involved and the reasons why particular interventions may be appropriate. This deeper understanding makes it easier to tailor therapy to each client rather than relying on a fixed script.

How do I choose the right hypnotherapy trainer?

Choose a trainer whose teaching style and values align with your own. Look for courses that provide clear explanations, encourage independent thinking, reference current research and support you in developing long-term clinical confidence rather than simply teaching a series of techniques.

How often should hypnotherapists complete CPD?

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) should be an ongoing part of every hypnotherapist's career. Many practitioners choose to develop specialist knowledge in areas that interest them or reflect changing client demand, gradually building expertise through advanced hypnotherapy courses and regular professional development.

What makes Academy of the Inner Mind hypnotherapy courses different?

Academy of the Inner Mind courses are designed to teach the thinking behind the therapy, not simply the techniques. Every course aims to provide the psychological context, clinical understanding and research evidence needed to help practitioners make informed therapeutic decisions. Wherever possible, original research is referenced, alongside discussion of both the strengths and limitations of the current evidence, enabling students to think critically and continue developing their skills beyond the course itself.

Who teaches the Academy of the Inner Mind courses?

Academy of the Inner Mind courses are written and taught by Dr Claire Jack, an experienced hypnotherapist, educator and researcher. Before founding the Academy, Claire taught and researched at university level, and that academic background continues to shape every course. The emphasis is on combining practical clinical skills with evidence-informed teaching, critical thinking and real-world application so practitioners leave with both knowledge and confidence.

Are advanced hypnotherapy courses suitable for newly qualified practitioners?

Yes, provided the course is appropriate for your level of experience. Many newly qualified hypnotherapists use advanced CPD to begin developing specialist areas of practice, while experienced practitioners often use CPD to refresh their knowledge, explore new approaches and remain up to date with current research and best practice.
